Transpacific Yacht Race New Course Record Trophy
Roy E. Disney
Recognized as the premier offshore race, the Transpacific Yacht Race starts at Point Fermin, San Pedro near Los Angeles and ends close to the Diamond Head Lighthouse in Honolulu. Since the inception of the race in 1906, the elapsed time record had only been broken a handful of times, and in anticipation of the next momentous occurrence, the stunning New Course Record Trophy was created. Inspired by the early H1 time-keeping piece by John Harrison, the top of the trophy is an interpreted clock that marks the record time, with dials for the year, month and day. Carved in the Koa wood body, Ulu—the tiki god of the ocean—links to the race’s Hawaiin beginnings. With every element of the trophy a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted piece, it is a singular and coveted award.
